Israel halts Palestinian payments: Objects to role played by hardline Hamas, which is seeking aid from Muslim world |
20 Feb 2006 |
This marks what could be the beginning of a disaster of epic proportions. The civil service provides a large number of jobs for Palestinians. If they do not get paid, the loss of an income on top of the already rampant hopelessness that exists in the territory could fuel massive demonstrations. Those demonstrations could create the conditions the Israeli Defence Force needs to engage in wholesale slaughter. Of course, this is worst case scenario. Let's hope it does not come to that.
From the story:
Israel's cabinet decided Sunday to immediately freeze the transfer of about $50 million US a month in tax and customs receipts due to the Palestinian Authority, arguing that the swearing in of a Hamas-dominated legislature on Saturday meant that the Palestinians were now led by the hardline group.
...
Although the cabinet decided to hold back on other penalties it had been considering, its move to withhold the receipts immediately put it at odds with its main ally, the United States, and the other members of the so-called quartet -- the European Union, Russia and the United Nations -- that has been promoting peace efforts between Israel and the Palestinians. |

Exxon Mobil Corp., the world's largest investor-owned oil company, said first-quarter earnings jumped 44 per cent as energy prices soared. Sales rose 21 per cent to $82.1 billion, more than the yearly economic output of Egypt. |

Venezuelan oil giant provides timely boost to Achilles heel of Cuban economy (GLOBE AND MAIL) |
29 Apr 2005 |
Venezuelan state oil giant Petroleos de Venezuela SA will prospect for, pump and refine oil from Cuba's Gulf of Mexico economic zones, the company announced yesterday, in a potential boon for Cuba's President Fidel Castro. The announcement came as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez paid a visit to Cuba to bolster the countries' economic co-operation, and open a PDVSA office in Cuba. Spain's Repsol YPF SA also has been prospecting off Cuba, while U.S. multinationals remain shut out because of the U.S. embargo. PDVSA will work with Cuba "in prospecting and production [on new wells located in territorial waters] as well as in refining and marketing," PDVSA said. |

Haiti clash turns deadly (Red Deer Advocate) |
29 Apr 2005 |
Haitian police opened fire Wednesday on a crowd of apparently peaceful protesters demanding the release of detainees loyal to ousted president Jean-Bertrand Aristide and at least five people were killed.
Wednesday's shooting came as the U.S. State Department confirmed it plans to waive an arms embargo to allow sales of thousands of arms for the Haitian police, whom critics accuse of brutality, summary executions and persecution of pro-Aristide loyalists. |
