The G-Spot FAQ

Curiousity-inspiring we are. Here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is The Garden Spot?

The Garden Spot is a pay-what-you-can vegan soup kitchen designed to serve healthy, affordable meals to all members of the Carleton community. We believe in the importance of revealing how food affects the environment and to challenge the social inequalities that create barriers to proper nourishment. We are a student run organization that is creating an alternative to the corporate dominated agricultural industry and the monopolistic food services at Carleton University.

How does the Garden Spot work?

The Garden Spot is operated by the Carleton Food Collective, a non-profit, consensus based organization. We aim to work outside the defective food industry by creating a revolutionary method of collection and distribution. We depend on local grocers to donate produce that would otherwise be wasted and ask that friends volunteer or "pay what they can" when eating. With this approach we create a food cycle that becomes more dependant on people rather than revenues. We serve over 250 meals every school day beginning at noon in the unicentre building at Carleton University. With the use of reusable dishes and the composting of table scraps, the Garden Spot operates 100% waste free. To minimize dish washing we encourage students to bring their own reusable containers.

Why is the Garden Spot vegan?

The Garden Spot has chosen to be a vegan service in order to make our meals available to EVERYONE. Vegan meals are foods that do not contain any meat or animal products. It has been known for thousands of years that humans can maintain healthy lives without the consumption of meats, milks or eggs. The Garden Spot believes in peace, sustainability, and the respect of our planets diversity and life.

Why should Carleton University support the Garden Spot?

The corporate food service at Carleton has continued to take advantage of the student population with exorbitant prices, and has failed to serve people of all needs. Be it religious, personal, or financial. The Carleton Food Collective believes that if you eat well, you think well, and consequently, you learn well. By gathering together as a collective, we can produce healthy, cheap meals that will serve our education. Our meals provide the positive environment, and create a source of community, where all people can express their beliefs and ideas over a wholesome lunch.
