Why are Canada and Canadian in quotations?
Simply put we feel that Canada's legitimacy as a country should be thrown into question because it was built on stolen land and broken treaties. The first Eurpoeans to come to 'Canada' made agreements with the First Nations of this landmass to ensure the development of cultures and Nations side by side. The europeans broke these agreements thus there legitiment right to be here comes into question. By spelling 'Canada' in quotations we are trying to do our part to get people to ask more questions about this issue even though the scope of this site does nto necessarily go into depth on this subject. Furthermore, the regular spelling lends tacit support to a state whose roles we hope will come into further questioning as the content of this wiki is developed.
Why is Democracy in quotations ?
While we acknowledge that we have much more freedom than many, we do not believe that freedom should be a privilege for the few nor do we think that this is as good as it gets. We arrive at this by working from a definition that democracy means that those who are affected by a desicion make the desicion. This is not the case in the current system of voting once every four years for an unproportionally represented MP who may have closer links to corporate interests than to those of their constituents. The struggles for freedom and democracy are not only a part of our past but of our present as well.
Who are you people ?
The site started from a idea a person had and brought to their history class at Carleton University. But from the begining the idea was for the site to be run collectively and many people were interested. Right now we are in the early stages of its development and many changes will be happening based on the ideas of the group. The group is completely open and anyone can help out by adding information to the site or editing it. From time to time there may be meetings so people can meet in person and if you have questions and would like to talk to someone in person you can call 613.237.0918.
Where did this idea come from ?
To be honest this idea is not completely new it is based on the History by the Mintues website and the moments that appeared on t.v. Various spoofs on it have also been created. But those involved had a more critical analysis on 'Canadian' History and wanted to expose some of the darkers sides to it. If we want to move forward in making postive change in this world we need to look at our history and own up to our mistakes. Most of what you find on this site is certainly not taught to children in school.
